The iconic Indian Industrialist, Philanthropist, and former Chairman of Tata Group, Ratan Tata, shared a timeless friendship with a young entrepreneur and Social activist. Shantanu Naidu was Ratan Tata’s personal assistant and close collaborator. Most importantly, Naidu was Tata’s very close friend. They shared a very dynamic bond which was very significant in the world of business.
Shantanu Naidu, an engineer and MBA graduate, caught Tata’s attention when he created a reflective collar for stray dogs to protect them from injuries caused by vehicles at night. This was one of Naidu’s startup ideas known as ‘Motopaws’. Ratan Tata, recognized for his compassionate and genuine affection for animals, was impressed by Naidu’s thoughtful gesture toward stray dogs. Nobody knew that this initial connection of passion and kindness would become a stronger friendship of mutual respect and companionship.
The age gap between the two men was 54 years. But the huge age gap was never a hindrance to their beautiful friendship. They both shared a bond filled with deep connection, love, and respect for each other. Tata helped with Shantanu’s startup ideas as well. Their likes and dislikes were in sync as they both shared a mutual love for animals as well as for elderly people. Shantanu Naidu also launched a startup called GoodFellows, which focuses on supporting the well-being and mental health of senior citizens. This initiative aims to provide companionship and assistance to elderly individuals, helping them combat loneliness and improve their quality of life. Ratan Tata has been a strong supporter of this venture, providing guidance and encouragement to help it thrive. The startup reflects Naidu’s commitment to social impact and community engagement.
Ratan Tata and Shantanu Naidu shared a bond that lasted for about a decade, during which Naidu accompanied Tata everywhere as his assistant. Their relationship was so special that Naidu wrote a book titled “I Came Upon a Lighthouse,” which reflects the knowledge and values he gained from Tata. When Ratan Tata passed away, Naidu expressed his deep grief in an emotional note, stating that their friendship had created an irreplaceable void in his life. Even in Tata’s absence, the remarkable, unique, and rare bond they shared continues to be a topic of conversation and will always be remembered.
