Liberty is the right of an individual to act the way he/she desires. Liberty is an ancient concept that has a very political origin. Liberty, though a seven-letter word, was not that easily obtained. Throughout human history, people have constantly fought for ‘liberty.’ Every race and every country had had its own share of freedom movements and struggles.
This article aims to discuss the status of liberty in today’s society, especially how the younger generation perceives the concept of liberty. In my view, liberty should be reserved mostly for legitimate rights. Because the younger generation often misuses it to seek attention and create a false sense of heroism. Liberty should be exercised for essential purposes such as the right to vote, the right to express one’s opinions, the right to work, and the right to education etc., According to me, liberty, if used right, will pave the way to the ‘ideal’ society: A society free from corruption with an efficient administrative system; a society devoid of crime with well-educated citizens, and a society where safety is guaranteed for both women and men, and individuals will be independent. The creation of an ideal society is achievable only if we exercise our right to liberty with mindfulness and responsibility.
Since we are talking about slavery and liberty we need to address the liberty of the mind as well. In today’s modern world, it is easy for the mind to fall victim. Knowingly or unknowingly we often do get influenced by others. Opinions, judgments, and ideologies of others do have an effect on us. Nowadays, this effect is far greater than it was earlier. The liberty of the mind should be preserved at all costs because that’s where your individuality lies. I guess any form of slavery starts with the imprisonment of our minds and thoughts. In a technologically dominated world guarding our minds and retaining our individuality must be our topmost priority.
Finally, I would like to leave a thought for all the future pillars of this country to ponder upon. More of a suggestion than a thought, we as the future pillars should aim for a holistic development that will eventually lead to the development of our country. We should lead a life of liberation that would benefit us and our society as a whole.
