The Hatred on Social Media

KEVIN. C

I, CSE 2

There are so many people who post their pictures or their extraordinary talents like dancing, singing, arts, etc. across various social media platforms like Instagram, Facebook, and YouTube, etc. The viewers who spend their time and data watching it have all the right to either support it or criticize it.

But many people on social media have misunderstood the difference between criticism and hatred. Constructive criticism is always valuable when phrased as “It’s not good” or “Do better next time” etc. However, spreading hatred through trolling, verbal abuse, or using inappropriate language in the comment section is never acceptable.

Recently, I watched a reel on Instagram featuring a young woman who is differently abled and doesn’t have her two arms. She posted a video of herself dancing to her favourite song, and I was amazed by her fantastic performance. However, when I looked at the comment section, I was deeply saddened. Instead of appreciating her dance, many people chose to troll her because of her disabilities. Even though there were some positive comments, they received fewer likes compared to the abusive and trolling remarks. That day, it became clear to me that the concept of humanity in today’s generation is a myth; it seemed to have died long ago.

This hatred isn’t limited to targeting individuals; it also extends to toxic fan wars visible between fans of actors like Vijay, Ajith, and Rajinikanth in cinema, or in cricket where fans argue over the captaincy and performances Dhoni, Kohli, and Rohit. Similar conflicts arise between Messi and Ronaldo fans in football, and so forth. These fan rivalries may never cease, but they can be conducted in a more constructive manner. Unfortunately, some fans resort to trolling other actors or sportsmen to elevate their own celebrities above others.

This is how Toxicity and Hatred is being spread across social media. I would like to conclude this article by saying that criticizing others is always good because it helps them grow better but trolling them or spreading hatred against them is always harmful. As Human beings, we must pledge to never engage in such negative behaviour again.
