The SRMVEC’s Diplomatic Adventure: MUN Edition 3.0

Harshavardhan. N

EEE, I Year

Stepping into the world of the Model United Nations (MUN) conference is like embarking on a journey where diplomacy, debate, and global issues intertwine to create an enriching experience. Recently, I had the opportunity to participate in the United Nations Security Council (UNSC) committee at the MUN conference organised by Sai Ram Engineering College, and it turned out to be an unforgettable experience that broadened my perspective on international affairs and diplomacy.

From the moment I entered the committee room, the atmosphere buzzed with anticipation and enthusiasm. Delegates from various backgrounds and with diverse perspectives had gathered to discuss pressing global issues, mirroring the real-life dynamics of the UN Security Council. As I sat among them, I felt a rush of excitement mingled with nervousness, knowing that the next few days would challenge my diplomatic skills and test my knowledge of international relations.

My Co-delegate(Bhavna, EIE) and I (Harshavardhan, EEE) entered day 1 of the council as the delegates of Ecuador with much research and enthusiasm, we started influencing other delegates by explaining our ideology on resolving the ongoing conflict in Yemen. We were surprised that almost the entire council was interested in our resolution plans which further motivated us to join allies with certain other countries and even to refine our draft resolution to improve the chances of getting passed but day 1 concluded with a slighter bit of disappointment.

On day 2 and the final day of our MUN journey started with firm determination. Keeping in mind the takeaways of day 1 we worked on drafting a standout resolution. Our heads held higher than ever, we swiftly began our mission to become the backbone of the committee with crucial general speaker’s list (GSL) speeches and important points of information added in the moderated caucus. With the support of other delegates, we started drafting our final resolution while neighboring countries surrounded us with much anticipation for their contribution. We proudly became the main sponsor of the resolution alongside the United States of America and the Republic of France with 13 other signatories which as a first-time MUNer was a proud moment for my Co-delegate and me.

The moment of truth is the voting session which decides the progress of the council but to our surprise, the only resolution accepted for further voting was ours. As the voting began the first NO was from the delegates of Algeria which didn’t make much impact. There was an ecstatic sensation among the delegates after witnessing the succession of YES votes except when China spoiled the mood by voting NO for our resolution. However, the voting session ended with Ecuador getting 13/15 votes. The council ultimately failed to pass our resolution as China voted against us which left us with woe and disappointment. However, we exited the room with much appreciation from other delegates for our hard work and dedication.

Overall the MUN was a unique experience that I won’t forget or regret participating in. However, our college’s debut run at MUN 3.0 was phenomenal with B.P. Hariharan(IT-2) winning the special honour shield for exhibiting his ruthlessness at IPC-Journalism, similarly, S. Divyadharshini(ECE-1), Divyashree B.M(ECE-1), Deshma P(ECE-1) got appreciated for their valuable participation at G20 summit council as the delegates of Mexico and Durai Murugan M(EIE), Ferdinand Paul S(ECE-1) received their share of appreciation for playing a crucial role at UN Security Council as the delegates of Sierra Leone, also, Sanjay S(EIE), Mohamed Waseem A(CSE-2) successfully played their part as the delegates of Somalia at the UN Security Council and finally Harshavardhan N(EEE), Bhavna A(EIE) received huge appreciation for deciding the fate of the UN Security Council and becoming the main sponsor of the only resolution submitted in the council which bagged a whooping 13/15 votes.

With numerous achievements, the MUN Club of SRM Valliammai Engineering College, coordinated by Dr. M. Chithra and Dr. Sheeba Manodh, is eagerly striving to fill their cabinet with many more trophies and honours.
