Air Liquide successfully demonstrated an industrial-scale ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking technology at the Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium in November 2025. Since hydrogen is difficult to transport and store, it is often converted into ammonia for shipping and later reconverted to hydrogen. Using advanced reactor design and heat-integration systems, this process efficiently converts ammonia back into hydrogen with minimal direct carbon emissions, marking an important step toward a global hydrogen energy supply chain.
